CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 7, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Camden and Rowan University men's soccer teams both posted shutout victories on the first day of the Scarlet Raptors' 19th annual Cialella Soccer Classic here Saturday.

Rowan edged nationally-ranked SUNY-Cortland, 1-0, in the first game and Rutgers-Camden topped the College of Staten Island, 2-0, in the nightcap.

On Sunday, the Cialella Soccer Classic will conclude with another pair of games. Rowan will face the College of Staten Island at 2 p.m. and Rutgers-Camden will face SUNY-Cortland at 4:30 p.m.

The tournament is named after long-time Rutgers-Camden fixture Dr. Edward Cialella, who served as a student-athlete, coach, educator and athletic director at the school from the mid-1960s until his retirement in December, 2002.

Rowan 1, Cortland 0

The only goal of the game came at 6:50 when Rowan freshman forward Jay Vandermark headed home a long restart by junior midfielder Mohamed Elgayar. That allowed the Profs (3-0) to edge Cortland (2-1), which entered the game ranked No. 2 nationally in the pre-season D3soccer.com poll and No. 11 in the pre-season United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25.

The win wasn't without some anxious moments, however, as Cortland held a 12-10 advantage in shots and a commanding 10-3 margin in corner kicks. The Red Dragons' best chance, however, came late in the first half after freshman forward Wismento Saint-Germain was taken down in the box, earning a penalty kick. The kick was taken by junior forward Cam LaVallee, but was saved on a clutch stop by Rowan junior keeper James Weinberg.

Weinberg finished with five saves, while Cortland senior keeper Sean Kelly had four.

Rutgers-Camden 2, Staten Island 0

Rutgers-Camden received one goal in each half by junior forward Skyler Diggs, giving him four goals overall and half of the game-winning goals for the 4-0 Scarlet Raptors.

Diggs broke the scoring ice at the 13-minute mark when senior back Darnell Brown sent a long pass up the field for senior midfielder Chris Taraska, who threaded a ball to Diggs breaking into the box. He finished with a shot into the right side.

In the second half, a pass from senior forward Patrick Grudnik sprung Diggs into the left side of the box, where he angled a shot into the right side in the 53rd minute.

Rutgers-Camden outshot Staten Island (0-1), 14-10, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalie Kyler White picked up the Raptors' shutout with two saves, while hiking his record to 3-0. Junior Jake Foeldes made six saves for the Dolphins.
