GALLOWAY, N.J. (Aug. 31, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team was picked for third place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference in a pre-season poll by the NJAC's coaches, and the Scarlet Raptors' rugged schedule on opening weekend featured road matches against the two teams selected to finish above them.
Rutgers-Camden opened its season here Saturday, dropping a 6-3 decision against Stockton University, the pre-season pick for second place in the NJAC. On Sunday morning, the Raptors travel to Ewing to face perennial NJAC champion, and pre-season favorite, The College of New Jersey at 9:30 a.m.
Sophomore
LeAnne Hall helped to collect two of the Raptors' wins on opening day. Playing in the fourth singles spot, Hall rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 marathon victory. She also teamed with senior
Aubrey Hawn for an 8-2 win at second doubles.
Rutgers-Camden's other victory came from sophomore
Tiffany Trivers at the second singles spot when she posted a 6-2, 6-4 win. Trivers and senior
Danielle Lemma lost at first doubles, 8-4.
In the third doubles position, sophomore
Morgan Dempsey and freshman
Laurel DiStefano were edged in a close 7-8 (4-7) match. DiStefano, making her collegiate debut in the match, also dropped a narrow decision in a marathon third singles match, losing 3-6, 7-5, 7-10.
At first singles, Hawn was defeated, 3-6, 3-6, while Lemma lost at fifth singles, 1-6, 1-6. Dempsey dropped a 3-6, 1-6 match at sixth singles.
