UNION, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2019) – With a three-game winning streak, including back-to-back victories over nationally-ranked teams, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team was looking to extend its good fortunes here Saturday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
The Raptors extended their unbeaten string, but saw their winning streak snapped as they played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Kean University.
Rutgers-Camden stands at 8-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in NJAC play, while Kean is 5-4-1 and 0-1-1.
Sophomore forward
Joni Gjyleri scored both Rutgers-Camden goals, giving the Scarlet Raptors a one-goal lead each time. Kean came back to tie on both occasions and the Cougars outshot the Raptors, 8-3, in the two overtime periods before settling for the tie.
Gjyleri struck for an unassisted goal only 3:03 into the contest, giving the Raptors the lead throughout most of the first half. With only 47 seconds left before halftime, however, Kean's Felipe Lucas sprung Max Acosta on the right side, who beat Raptor junior keeper
Kieran Burns one-on-one and hit a shot that deflected off the crossbar and into the net.
The teams remained tied for most of the second half until Gjyleri struck again with 12:24 remaining in regulation, scoring off a corner kick by freshman
Enrique Sanchez. The two goals gave Gjyleri five for the season, while the assist was the second for Sanchez.
Kean tied the game almost immediately, scoring with 11:51 remaining on a shot by Lucas from just beyond the box.
The Cougars held a 21-9 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks in the game. Burns made five saves for the Scarlet Raptors, while Dillon Konzelmann had two for the Cougars.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action with another NJAC game Wednesday. The Scarlet Raptors play a 6:30 p.m. game in Ewing against The College of New Jersey.
