CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 2, 2021) – Junior midfielder
Lindsay Hernandez scored a pair of second-half goals as the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team rallied past William Paterson University, 2-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
It was the first win for the Scarlet Raptors since opening day, lifting their record to 2-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NJAC. It snapped a seven-game winless streak (0-6-1).
The loss dropped the Pioneers to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the NJAC.
Paterson leads the all-time series, 10-7-4, but the Scarlet Raptors have gone 3-2-1 in the last six games between the teams.
William Paterson scored its lone goal in the 27th minute on a long shot by sophomore forward Julia Fiorito into the left side of the net over the head of Raptor sophomore keeper
Chloe Beasley. It was the lone Pioneer shot of the opening half and one of only two in the game for Paterson, which was out-shot, 9-2. Rutgers-Camden also held a 3-0 lead in corner kicks.
The Scarlet Raptors finally drew even at 65:25 following a push near the far post on a corner kick, which drew a penalty kick. Hernandez buried the shot for her second successful penalty kick of the week. She also scored on in a 3-1 loss at Stockton on Wednesday.
Nearly eight minutes later, Hernandez intercepted a kick from the Pioneers' Erica Hickey and looped a high shot over Hickey into the net. It was her third goal of the season, all coming in the Raptors' two games this week. It also was the Raptors' first goal from the flow of play since junior midfielder
Maggie Horn scored in a 2-1 loss to Adrian College on Sept. 4.
Beasley finished with one save to earn the win, aided once again by the Scarlet Raptors' stellar defensive play. Hickey had two saves for the Pioneers.
Rutgers-Camden takes a break from NJAC competition to play at Goucher College in Baltimore in a 7 p.m. contest Wednesday.
