STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden indoor track program has waited a long time to display its talents. A group of Scarlet Raptors finally had that chance here Friday at the Fastrack Season Opener at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
With the pandemic cancelling the entire 2020-21 indoor track season, Rutgers-Camden hadn't competed in any indoor meet since several Scarlet Raptors participated in the ECAC Div. III Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 6-7, 2020.
In their season opener, the Scarlet Raptor women received strong performances from several young female athletes, including
Alexis Marini, competing in her first indoor collegiate meet since the season was cancelled last winter. Marini, who made her collegiate debut during the 2021 outdoor season, finished eighth of 35 athletes in the shot put (10.94 meters) and was 16th of 25 in the weight throw (10.32 meters).
Three freshmen showed their potential in the 22-athlete field of the 60-meter dash.
Evelyn Macias
placed sixth (8.70),
Bree Smith was 12th (9.09) and
Francis Hill finished 15th (9.29). Macias also competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing 40th of 56 athletes in a time of 29.35.
Rebecca Savidge, who has competed with the cross country and outdoor track programs, made her debut with the indoor track program. A sophomore academically who has freshman eligibility with indoor track, she ran the mile in a time of 7:12.73, placing 28th.
Senior
Kirstin Slater finished 16th out of 22 athletes in the 3,000-meter run, posting a 12:32.68 clocking.
On the men's side, the Raptors ran a pair of athletes,
David Morrow and
Andrew Barnhardt, in the 3,000-meter run. Morrow finished 24th of 31 athletes (10:18.78), while Barnhardt was 25th (10:21.17).
Dylan Trow made his debut in his third collegiate sport, finishing 31st in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:17.92. Trow previously played men's basketball and ran cross country.
Junior
Meek Sumter made his Raptor collegiate debut in the shot put, finishing 30th (8.09 meters). Freshman
Ken Komatsu finished 59th of 69 athletes in his first collegiate meet while running the 200-meter dash (25.62).
Rugers-Camden returns to the Ocean Breeze facility on Friday, Dec. 10, to compete in the Wagner College Shootout.
