NEWARK, N.J. (Feb. 6, 2021) – After losing its season opener on a buzz-beater at home Friday night, the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team was looking to get even with rival Rutgers-Newark Saturday night in the back end of their home-and-home series.
Rutgers-Newark had other ideas, as the Scarlet Raiders built an early lead and kept on rolling to a 68-57 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game. The win comes one night after the Scarlet Raiders (2-0 overall/2-0 in the NJAC) rallied to post a 65-63 win in Camden behind a 25-9 fourth-quarter run.
After the teams traded the first two field goals, Newark went on a five-point run and was never threatened. The Scarlet Raiders led, 19-8, after one quarter and 31-25 at halftime. Newark scored the first four points of the third quarter and opened up a 47-37 lead heading into the final frame.
The Scarlet Raiders placed four players in double figures, led by sophomore guard Samiyah Horton, who scored 19 points one night after her buzzer-beater defeated the Scarlet Raptors in Camden. Sophomore forward Ebony Odom Barnes collected a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Syncere Lambert added 13 points. Freshman guard Kellie Martinez notched 12 points and nine boards.
Raptor sophomore guard/forward
