Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's tennis team opens season with 6-1 win over NJCU

CAMDEN, NJ (March 27, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team closed the fall semester of its 2019 season with eight straight wins on the way to an 8-2 record. The team then had to endure the spring and fall 2020 semesters being shut down due to the pandemic.

The Scarlet Raptors picked up right where they left off as they opened the 2021 spring semester with a 6-1 victory over New Jersey City University in the first match of the season for both New Jersey Athletic Conference teams.

Rutgers-Camden won all four of the five contested singles matches and all two doubles matches in the competition. Both teams were missing one player, so neither the third doubles or sixth singles spots were played.

Along the way, junior letterwinner Erica Steer picked up her first two collegiate victories, posting a 6-0, 6-3 win at fourth singles and combining with junior Hannah Cohan for an 8-4 victory at second doubles.

Freshman Samantha Hoban also earned her first collegiate win, teaming with junior LeAnne Hall for an 8-7 victory at first doubles. Hoban, playing in the first singles spot in her first collegiate match, dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision against NJCU sophomore Giada Zorzan.

The Scarlet Raptors also saw newcomer Alyna Cabrera notch her first collegiate win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at fifth singles. Cabrera was a member of the Rutgers-Camden lacrosse team during the 2019 spring semester.

Hall continued her stellar career on the tennis courts with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles, in addition to her win at first doubles. She now owns a 17-4 singles record and a 16-5 doubles mark entering her third season. Her 33 total victories are tied for sixth in program history.

In addition to teaming with Steer at second doubles, Cohan swept her match at third singles, winning 6-0, 6-0.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday, April 3, with an 11 a.m. NJAC match at William Paterson University.
