CAMDEN, N.J. (March 22, 2022) – Junior right-hander
Dylan Wichrowski hurled 6.1 strong innings and senior righty
Ethan Pritchett was unhittable out of the bullpen as the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team defeated Alvernia University, 6-2, in a non-conference game here Tuesday.
The win lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 9-7, while the Golden Wolves fall to 6-11-1.
Alvernia struck first with a third-inning run to break up a scoreless pitching duel between Wichrowski and sophomore David Linsalata. The Golden Wolves used a walk, a sacrifice and an RBI double by sophomore center fielder Lucas Floyd.
Rutgers-Camden finally broke through the pitching of Linsalata (1-1) with a three-run fifth inning, sparked by a leadoff walk from senior left fielder
Garrett Warner. One out later, freshman right fielder
Frankie Romond singled Warner to second. He advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw by Linsalata and was squeezed home by junior second baseman
Danny Vazquez. Freshman third baseman
Andrew Brown followed with an RBI single, part of a huge performance which saw him go 3-for-4 and also reach base as a hit batsman.
Junior first baseman
Jack Murphy plated Vazquez with a ground out to cap the rally.
Rutgers-Camden added two more runs in the sixth inning, after senior shortstop
Jesse Gerdes greeted a new Alvernia pitcher, freshman Evan Thomas, with a leadoff double. Senior designated hitter
R.J. McGettigan and Warner both drew walks to end Thomas' day, and new pitcher Christian Burrus walked sophomore center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics to force home a run. Romond followed with an RBI fielder's choice.
Wichrowski sailed into the seventh inning before a walk and a one-out RBI triple ended his day. Pritchett came in to fan the next two batters, stranding a runner at third and ending the threat. He finished up the game working 2.2 hitless innings, walking one and striking out four for his first save.
Wichrowski raised his record to 3-1, working 6.1 innings of six-hit ball. He allowed two walks and two earned runs, while striking out four.
Rutgers-Camden added its final run in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of singles by Murphy and a pinch-hit RBI hit by junior
Connor Van Dine.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Friday when it hosts Widener University at 3:30 p.m.
