CAMDEN, N.J. (April 12, 2022) – Freshman right fielder
Frankie Romond went 5-for-5 with one run and four RBIs to highlight a 14-hit attack, leading the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team over Neumann University, 10-4, in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
The Scarlet Raptors improved to 15-11, while the Knights fell to 8-14.
Romond's five hits were one shy of the program record, shared by three players, and the most since
R.J. Concepcion collected five hits in the second game of a doubleheader against New Jersey City University on April 10, 2021. Earlier that year,
Billy Eisler had five hits in Game One of a twinbill against Kean University on March 27.
Neumann scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, only to have Rutgers-Camden bounce back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. The Scarlet Raptors used an error and three hits, including a game-tying RBI single by Romond.
Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good with a four-run second inning, sparked by back-to-back walks to sophomore third baseman
Dustin Bellis and sophomore center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics. A bunt single by senior shortstop
Jesse Gerdes loaded the bases before Bellis scored on a double play ball. Junior first baseman
Jack Murphy doubled home Uzdanovics and junior left fielder
Jake Guglielmi drew a walk. After freshman designated hitter
Diego Salazar was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, Romond ripped a two-run single up the middle.
A two-run Raptor fifth inning was started by a bunt single from Romond. Freshman second baseman
Sebastian Vega sacrificed, Bellis singled and Uzdanovics squeezed home Romond. A pair of wild pitches allowed Bellis to score.
Rutgers-Camden added its final two runs on two hits, a walk and an error in the eighth inning. Salazar and Romond had RBI singles.
Sophomore
Ricky Glascock started for the Scarlet Raptors and worked four innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs and one walk. He struck out seven. Sophomore
Zachary Cerveny picked up the win with three innings of one-hit shutout ball. Cerveny (3-1) walked one and struck out five.
In addition to Romond's huge night, Murphy went 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Bellis and freshman catcher
Andrew Brown also scored two runs apiece.
Rutgers-Camden returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference action Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Stockton University.
