CAMDEN, N.J. (Feb. 13, 2023) – Rutgers University-Camden freshman forward
Cameron Downs captured his third honor this season as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week after averaging 21 points and 9.5 rebounds in two games last week.
Downs also won the NJAC Rookie of the Week honor on November 28 and January 16.
Last Wednesday, Downs collected 16 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor, and added four rebounds, one assist and one steal, in a loss against Kean University. On Saturday, in a double-overtime loss at William Paterson University, Downs notched his fourth double-double of the season, collecting 26 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. He shot 9-for-16 from the floor, including 2-for-4 from three-point range, and was 6-for-8 from the foul line. He added five assists and one blocked shot.
Downs leads the team in scoring (15.2 ppg) and blocked shots (13) this season, while ranking second in rebounding (5.8 rpg), tied for second in steals (24) and third in assists (32). On Jan. 4 against Kean, he notched a career-high 29 points. He also has highs of six assists (against Rowan, Feb. 1), four steals (against FDU-Florham, Nov. 27) and three blocked shots (against Ramapo, Feb. 4).
In addition to his three NJAC Rookie of the Week honors this season, Downs has been named the Rutgers-Camden Raptor of the Week three times (Nov. 28, Jan. 9 and Jan. 16) during his rookie season.
Rutgers-Camden closes its season with an 8 p.m. NJAC game at New Jersey City University Wednesday.
