CAMDEN, N.J. (Feb. 10, 2024) – On a day when the Rutgers University-Camden men's basketball team honored guards
Gavin Henry and
Ethan Tarte with a pre-game Senior Day ceremony, the Scarlet Raptors continued their quest for program history.
Rutgers-Camden placed three players in double figures as it defeated William Paterson University, 75-63, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game, 75-63. The victory lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 13-11 overall and 8-9 in the conference, tied with both Kean and Rutgers-Newark for the sixth and final playoff spot with one game remaining.
Rutgers-Camden closes its regular season with an 8 p.m. home game on Wednesday, Feb. 14, against New Jersey City University. Kean and Newark have road games at Stockton and TCNJ, respectively, on Wednesday night.
Rutgers-Camden is 13-11 overall. Paterson falls to 6-18 overall and 1-16 in the NJAC with its 11th straight loss.
The Scarlet Raptors host New Jersey City University Wednesday night in their final regular-season game as they strive to
qualify for the NJAC playoffs for the first time in history. The only times the Scarlet Raptors have competed in the NJAC playoffs were during the two Covid-altered seasons (2020-21 and 2021-22), when every team in the conference was entered into the playoff field.
Rutgers-Camden led all the way, opening up a 7-0 lead in the first 2:16, with all points being scored by sophomore forward
Cherif Kanoute. The closest the Pioneers came after that was 7-3, before the Scarlet Raptors rattled off seven straight points to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 14-3. The Scarlet Raptors took a double-digit lead for good at 33-21 on a trey by Henry. They led, 37-23 at halftime.
Sophomore forward
Cameron Downs led the Scarlet Raptors with 12 points, while Kanoute and junior guard
Eric Benjamin both added 11. Henry notched nine.
Kanoute led the Raptors with seven rebounds, while junior forward
Jordany Pierre had a game-high four assists. Sophomore guard
Jordan Trusty-Smith led all players with four steals.
Senior guard Shawn Summers Jr. notched a game-high 18 points for William Paterson. Graduate student forward MJ Moncrieffe added 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, helping Paterson take a 40-35 edge off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden shot 50 percent (30-for-60) from the floor, while Paterson shot 20-for-54 (37.0).
