CAMDEN, N.J. (April 22, 2024) – Sophomore left fielder
Jacob Watson collected his milestone 100th career hit and it led to a two-run seventh inning that lifted the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team over Wilson College, 3-2, in a non-conference game here Monday night.
The contest was a makeup from a postponed game on April 2, and the win lifted Rutgers-Camden to 23-12. Wilson fell to 16-13.
Trailing, 2-1, entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Watson led off with a single to right center field, producing his 100th hit in only his 74th career game. He became the third Scarlet Raptor to collect his 100th hit this season, as senior
Jack Murphy notched his milestone on March 25 and senior
Auggie Uzdanovics added his 100th hit March 30.
With Watson running on the play, senior second baseman
Danny Vazquez grounded out to second base, putting Watson safely into scoring position. Junior right fielder
Steven Shaffer followed by reaching on a throwing error by Wilson's shortstop. Shaffer advanced all the way to second base, while Watson remained at third. On out later, junior first baseman
Diego Salazar delivered a two-run single to left field, producing a pair of unearned runs off Wilson senior reliever Shane Bowie (3-1), who ended up taking the tough loss.
The two runs made a winner out of Raptor freshman starter
Anthony Angelo Jr., who threw seven strong innings to raise his record to 2-1. He allowed seven hits and two earned runs, while striking out one. He didn't walk any batters.
Rutgers-Camden senior
Jacob Brennan and sophomore
Gavin Cunard both secured the victory with one shutout inning apiece. Cunard pitched the ninth inning, earning his second save. He allowed one hit – and picked off the pinch-runner at first base – and struck out one.
Wilson scored a third-inning run on a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly by senior center fielder Jordan McKenzie. Rutgers-Camden tied the game in the fourth inning on back-to-back singles by Salazar and junior third baseman
Jose Correa, setting the stage for a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop
Billy Richards.
Wilson regained the lead with a run in the sixth. McKenzie hit a one-out single, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by junior first baseman Jordan Daphney.
Salazar led Rutgers-Camden's 12-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs. Correa was 2-for-4.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Thursday when they play a 3:30 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Montclair State University.
