CAMDEN, NJ (Jan. 15, 2025) – The New Jersey City University women's basketball team placed four players in double figures, led by 17 points and a game-high eight assists from senior guard Destiny Battle, as they defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 71-54, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday afternoon.
NJCU improved to 3-10 overall and 3-5 in the NJAC, snapping a seven-game losing streak. Rutgers-Camden dropped to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference with its fourth straight loss.
NJCU has earned 10 straight wins against Rutgers-Camden, although the Scarlet Raptors lead the all-time series, 39-34.
The Gothic Knights led all the way, notching the first two field goals by Battle and sophomore forward Kendra Rigo before the Scarlet Raptors cut the gap to one point on a trey by graduate forward
Aiya Underwood. NJCU responded with the next eight points on its way to leads of 17-9 after one quarter and 35-25 at halftime.
The closest Rutgers-Camden came in the second half was a nine-point deficit on five occasions.
In addition to Battle, Rigo notched 15 points and game-high totals of eight rebounds and five steals. Junior guard Tahirah Kelley scored 12 points and sophomore forward Autumn John added 10 points and six rebounds for the Gothi Knights.
Rutgers-Camden received 21 points from forward
Taylor Hinson, her top scoring output for the Scarlet Raptors since transferring from Cairn University for her senior season. She shot 9-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the foul line.
Freshman guard
Hope Goodwine added eight points and a team-high four steals for the Scarlet Raptors, while Underwood and senior guard
Rahzirah Blocker both scored seven points. Freshman forward
Courtney Edmundo led the Raptors with seven rebounds and six assists.
NJCU shot 27-for-68 (39.7 percent) from the floor and 10-for-12 (83.3) from the foul line, while holding a 37-36 edge off the boards and forcing 28 Raptor turnovers. Rutgers-Camden shot 19-for-46 (41.3) from the floor and 12-for-20 (60.0) from the foul line.
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at William Paterson University.
