CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 4, 2025) – Senior guard
Rahzirah Blocker scored all of her game-high 20 points in the first half to lift the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team to a 17-point lead and the Scarlet Raptors went on to defeat The City College of New York, 74-44, in a non-conference game to open the new year here Saturday.
The win lifts Rutgers-Camden to 6-5, while CCNY falls to 0-6.
With both teams playing their first game since mid-December, the Scarlet Raptors raced to a 24-7 lead after one quarter and led, 37-20, 37-20, by halftime. Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good at 4-3 on a layup by freshman guard
Hope Goodwine, who finished with 13 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Blocker shot 9-for-13 from the floor and raised her career scoring output to 1,214 points, moving into ninth place on the program's all-time list. She passed Brittany Tyrner, who scored 1,195 points between 2009-13. Her next target is Megan Rulon (2002-06), who sits in eighth place with 1,220 points.
Blocker also moved into ninth place for career field goals with 456, passing the 451 by Turner.
Rutgers-Camden placed 12 players in the scoring column, including seven points apiece from freshman forward
Courtney Edmundo and senior guard
Na'Caia Jackson. Edmundo also added a game-high five steals and tied Goodwine and freshman guard
Mya Patino for game-high honors with four assists.
Rutgers-Camden won the battle of the boards, 53-34, with graduate forward
Aiya Underwood and freshman guard/forward
Amelia Zinckgraf leading the way with six apiece. Senior guard
Lanae Johnson-Kleinpeter added five rebounds and five points, while junior guard/forward
Taja Brown notched six points and four boards.
Rutgers-Camden shot 32-for-82 (39.0 percent) from the floor, while CCNY went 18-for-48 (37.5).
The Beavers received 11 points from senior guard Kasia Morrison and 10 from junior guard/forward Joscelyn Ramos. Freshman forward/center Amanda Fisher collected a game-high 10 rebounds for CCNY.
The Scarlet Raptors play another non-conference game on Monday when they travel to Drew University in Madison for a 7 p.m. contest. They return home Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game against Stockton University.
