Eric Cutry (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) broke a scoreless tie with 15 seconds remaining in the first half and the 18th-ranked Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team exploded for four second-half goals as they defeated Arcadia University, 5-0, to win the title at their 13th annual Cialella Soccer Classic.
It was the Scarlet Raptors' second straight Cialella title and their sixth in the tournament's history.
In the first game of the day, Eastern Mennonite blanked Cairn University, 3-0, to finish as the tournament's runner-up. The Royals edged Arcadia on the second tie-breaker, goal differential.
As the tournament champion, the Scarlet Raptors placed four players on the all-tournament team, including Offensive MVP
Mike Ryan (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Defensive MVP
Derek Lynch (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville). Also earning a berth on the all-tourney team for Rutgers-Camden were
Connor Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and
Mitch Grotti (Milmay, NJ/Millville).Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Eastern University.
Rutgers-Camden 5, Arcadia 0
Although the Scarlet Raptors (5-0) held a 27-6 advantage in shots, an 11-3 edge in corner kicks, and the Knights were playing a man down most of the game, Arcadia (1-2-1) held the Scarlet Raptors off the board until 15 seconds remaining in the first half, when Cutry and freshman forward
Julian Light (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) teamed up to break the scoreless deadlock. Light fed Cutry a pass on the right side of the box and Cutry drilled a shot into the left side for his first goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of his career.
The Knights played with 10 players for almost the entire game after one of their starters was red-carded for fighting at 9:38.
Rutgers-Camden broke the game open in the second half, starting with a goal by Ryan at 47:37, assisted by Grotti. It was the team-leading seventh goal for Ryan and Grotti's team-leading fifth assist.
Senior midfielder
Keegan Balle (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) made it a 3-0 game at 73:57 when he drilled a 40-yard laser into the net. It was his first goal since he transferred to Rutgers-Camden. Last season he was a Fourth-Team All-American at Division I Bradley University.
Sophomore midfielders
Guiseppe DeLuca (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) and
Jake Dowiak (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) closed out the scoring with their first goals of the season at 75:27 and 79:34, respectively. Both goals were assisted by senior midfielder/forward
Forrest Bennfors (Woking, England/Madison). Bennfors sent a pass from the left side into the box for DeLuca's tally, while Dowiak headed in a Bennfors corner kick.
Senior goalie
Mike Randall (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) made three saves to notch his third straight shutout. He ran his consecutive scoreless minute streak to 289:45.
Arcadia senior goalie
Ryan Lantzy (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) made three saves.
Eastern Mennonite 3, Cairn 0
In the first game of the day, the Royals (2-2) notched a late first-half goal by junior midfielder Mark Mast (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) and added a pair of second-half tallies for the victory.
Mast's game-winning goal came on a shot in the box, which deflected off a defender and into the net at 38:48.
Eastern Mennonite added a pair of second-half goals at 61:24 and 66:30 to put the game away. Sophomore forward Christian Rhine (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) notched the first one after weaving through several defenders across the top of the box and firing a shot into the left side of the net. Five minutes later, senior midfielder Juan Flores (Mt. Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson) took a direct kick at the top of the box to the left side and ripped it into the net for the final goal of the game.
The Royals held a 20-5 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks over the Highlanders (1-2).
Eastern Mennonite junior goalie Andrew Yoder (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) played the first 80:22 of the game and made one save. Freshman Peter Dutcher (Sugarcreek, OH/Central Christian) finished the game and made two saves in his 9:38 of work.
For Cairn, senior Dave Shaffer (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) made five saves.
