Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 16, 2014) – On a night when the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team was looking to stay on the heels of the New Jersey Athletic Conference co-leaders and solidify its position in the NJAC playoff picture, the Scarlet Raptors added a little history to their post-season push.
Junior forward
Mike Ryan (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) notched the 48th goal of his collegiate career on a second-half penalty kick, setting the Rutgers-Camden program record, as the Scarlet Raptors blanked The College of New Jersey, 3-0.
Clayton Taylor notched his first game-winning goal. Rutgers-Camden, which also received a first-half and game-winning goal by freshman midfielder
Clayton Taylor (Mendham, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) and a second-half strike by junior midfielder
Connor Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), improves to 9-6 overall. The Scarlet Raptors are 5-1 in the conference, one game behind co-leaders Rutgers-Newark and Montclair State.
TCNJ falls to 5-8-2 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC. Although the Lions lead the all-time series against the Scarlet Raptors, 22-7-5, Rutgers-Camden has gone 3-0-2 in the last five head-to-head matchups.
The Raptors scored the only goal they needed at 34:03 when Taylor headed home a throw-in by senior midfielder
Joe Auleta (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton). It was his second collegiate goal and first game winner.
Ryan's historical goal came at 56:06 following a handball in the box. His team-leading ninth goal gave him 48 for his three-year career, breaking the program mark he shared with
Mitch Grotti, who set the standard last season to cap his four-year career. Ryan also owns 108 career points, 10 shy of Grotti's program mark.
Hurff tacked on the final goal of the game, his fourth of the season, at 75:52 on a laser shot from the left side of the box to the upper right of the net. His goal came moments after junior midfielder
Giuseppe DeLuca (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) fired a shot off the crossbar.
Rutgers-Camden held a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 9-2 margin in corner kicks. Freshman goalie
Sean Matias (Vineland, NJ/Millville) made two saves to collect his first collegiate win and first collegiate shutout with the Scarlet Raptors.
TCNJ sophomore keeper
Jake Nesteruk (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) had five saves.
Both teams return to NJAC action on Saturday. TCNJ hosts Ramapo Camden at 1 p.m., while Rutgers-Camden plays a 6 p.m. contest at Montclair State University.
