Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The warning shot came early when the Haverford College men's soccer team missed a golden opportunity only 1:18 into the game on a diving header over the net by sophomore
Matthew Clausen (Glen Gardner, NJ/Delbarton School). The Fords didn't miss many more opportunities all night.
Junior forward
Brady Seitz (San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) notched a hat trick and Haverford exploded for seven goals to dominate Rutgers-Camden, 7-3, in a non-conference game here Monday night.
With their fourth win in five games, the Fords improve to 7-3.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 7-6 after allowing their most goals against since a 7-1 loss at Kean University October 6, 1999. The four-goal margin of defeat was the most since a 5-0 loss at Richard Stockton College Oct. 13, 2010.
On a night when the visitors held a 24-14 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks, Rutgers-Camden actually notched two of the first three goals. After Haverford put constant pressure on the Raptor goal, Rutgers-Camden countered at 9:04 when junior forward
Mike Ryan (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was sprung for a breakaway on a long clear from the defensive third by senior midfielder
Ryan Kelly (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford). Ryan, who scored two goals and added one assist on the night, raised his career goal-scoring output to 46, one shy of the program record set last season by
Mitch Grotti. The five points also hiked his career total to 104, making him only the fourth player in program history to break the century mark and moving him into third place, past George Scafidi (100 points, from 1974-77). Ryan needs only six points to tie Mike Zeno (1992-95) for second place on the career list and 14 points to tie Grotti's program record.
Haverford finally capitalized on its numerous chances at 33:20 when sophomore forward
Tejan Walcott (Cambria Heights, NY/The Lawrenceville School) collected a loose ball in the box, turned and finished a shot inside the right post. It was his third goal of the season and first of two on the day.
Only 43 seconds later, however, Rutgers-Camden responded when Ryan fed junior midfielder
Connor Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) to give the Raptors a 2-1 lead. It was their last lead of the night, and a short-lived one.
Seitz scored the tying goal, and the first of his hat track, off a serve from freshman midfielder
Russell Nicholson (Titusville, NJ/Hopewell Valley) at 35:21`. He added his second goal with only 2:06 remaining in the first half, heading in a corner kick by sophomore midfielder
Will Corkery (Needham, MA/Needham). Freshman forward
Ben Field (Portland, OR/Riverdale) got into the scoring act only 4:49 into the second half, scoring off a through ball from junior forward
Sam Yarosh (West Chester, PA/Unionville). Another Corkery corner kick at 65:19 produced a header at the far post for a goal by sophomore defender
Maclyn Willigan (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook), making it a 5-2 game.
Ryan broke Haverford's scoring run with an unassisted goal at 76:14, but the Fords closed out the game with goals by Walcott and Seitz in the span of 49 seconds with less than nine minutes remaining.
Sophomore goalie
Sam Miller (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island) earned the win with five saves in 81:31 minutes of playing time. Sophomore
Chris Gibson (Norfolk, MA/Noble and Greenough School) finished up the game with one save.
For the Scarlet Raptors, sophomore
Eric Bumbera (Wall, NJ/Wall) played the first 68:22, allowing five goals and making five saves. Freshman
Sean Matias (Vineland, NJ/Millville) allowed two goals and made two saves in the final 21:38.
Haverford will play another New Jersey Athletic Conference team on Wednesday when it hosts Rowan University in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden will travel to Ramapo College for a 1 p.m. NJAC game on Saturday.
