BRYN MAWR, Penn. – Senior
Jeff Bash (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) led the Rutgers University-Camden men's team and sophomore
Millie Kipp (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) powered the women's program as the Scarlet Raptors opened their 2014 cross country season at the Bryn Mawr Invitational here Friday night.
Bash finished eighth out of 42 runners with a time of 17:44.80 in the 5K event. Kipp, meanwhile, was 17th of 64, posting a time of 21:38.39 in the invitational, which didn't keep team scores.
The Scarlet Raptors ran nine athletes in the men's race and seven in the women's race.
Finishing second and third on the Raptors, and 12th and 13th overall, were freshman
Richard Campolungo (Burlington, NJ/Holy Cross) and sophomore
Marvin Sandoval (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic), who posted times of 18:03.06 and 18:14.27, respectively. Campolungo was making his collegiate debut.
Sophomore-eligible
Leo Impagliazzo (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) and freshman
Colin Ward (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), were 20th and 21st, overall with times of 18:43.04 and 19:33.13. Senior
Andrew Berger (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) finished 24th (19:43.00) and freshman
Brandon Sweeney (Bellmawr, NJ/Triton Regional) finished 26th (20:02.89).
Rounding out the men's team were junior
Robert O'Brien (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) and freshman
Omar Samaniego (Camden, NJ/LEAP Academy), who finished 39th (23:50.44) and 40th (24:37.81).
The Raptor women featured a trio of freshmen making their collegiate debuts and a sophomore transfer in her first Rutgers-Camden meet. Freshman
Brianna Dugan (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) finished second on the team and 25th overall (22:21.01), while sophomore letterwinner
Danielle Iannone (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was 28th (22:26.22). Another freshman,
Emily Daiutolo (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) finished 29th in a time of 22:36.52.
Sophomores
Melanie Derham (Somerdale, NJ/Triton) and
Kelly Donegan (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) were 52nd and 53rd, respectively in times of 27:52.17 and 28:04.12. Derham lettered for the Scarlet Raptors last season, while Donegan ran at Cabrini College.
Rounding out the Raptors' team was freshman
Brittany Thompson (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech), who finished 64th in a time of 36:47.67 in her collegiate debut.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Sept. 6 at the Highlander Invitational in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The women's 6K race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 12 p.m.
