CAMDEN, N.J. (April 27, 2015) – With the New Jersey Athletic Conference regular-season title on the line during the last weekend of play, it was the pitching staff that helped the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team secure its second straight top seed for the NJAC playoffs.
Two of the main contributors were recognized by the conference on Monday. Senior southpaw
Jeff Singer (Cinnaminson, NJ/Holy Cross) earned his second honor this season as the NJAC Pitcher of the Week. He also captured the award on April 6.
Freshman righty
Carter Fichter (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial), meanwhile, was named the NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week.
Singer started the Raptors rolling toward the NJAC regular-season championship by pitching a 7-0 no-hitter at Montclair State University on Thursday. He walked four and struck out 10, including the side in the ninth inning, as he authored the seventh no-hitter in program history.
In nine appearances (seven starts) this season, Singer owns a 4-2 record and a 2.15 ERA, while holding opponents to a .195 batting average. He has two complete games, the one shutout he picked up on his no-hitter, and also has notched one save. In 50.1 innings, he has struck out 58 batters and walked only 15.
Fichter, meanwhile, had a busy week while making two appearances, logging a 1-1 record and a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings. He opened his week with the starting assignment in a non-conference game at Susquehanna University on Tuesday, working six innings and allowing six hits, a walk and three earned runs. He struck out one and took the loss in the Raptors' 5-3 defeat.
Four days later, Fichter helped the Scarlet Raptors wrap up the NJAC regular-season title with an outstanding appearance in long relief during a 3-2, 12-inning victory over Kean University. He pitched nine shutout innings, allowing four hits and four walks, while striking out four.
Fichter has made seven appearances, including two starts, during his freshman season. He owns a 2-2 record and a 3.00 ERA in 30 innings, while also collecting one save.
In addition to Singer's first honor, the Raptors also have had junior
Kyle Gaff (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) earn honors as the NJAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week on March 16.
Rutgers-Camden hosts The College of New Jersey Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the first round of the double-elimination NJAC Baseball Championship tournament.
