Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 16, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team is beginning to accomplish things that the program hasn't seen in recent years, and the Scarlet Raptors took another climb up the ladder here Wednesday.
Newly-minted senior forward
Kelly Barbone (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional), who has been a tenacious defender for most of her collegiate career, scored two goals as Rutgers-Camden blanked the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 2-0, in a non-conference game.
With their second straight victory, the Scarlet Raptors improve to 3-2. The Dolphins fall to 1-3, with all three defeats coming at the hands of New Jersey Athletic Conference teams.
The Scarlet Raptors moved over .500 for the first time since winning their season opener on Sept. 1, 2012, a 2-1 double-overtime victory against FDU-Florham at the FDU Classic. Coupled with the Raptors' 3-2 victory Sunday at Drew University, it marked the program's first two-game winning streak since Sept. 24 and 27, 2014, when Rutgers-Camden posted consecutive 1-0 victories over Cabrini College and New Jersey City University.
With two goals on the day, the Raptors have now scored 10 times in their five games, nearly matching their entire output of 14 goals from last season.
Rutgers-Camden held a 20-2 advantage in shots and a 7-0 margin in corner kicks on the hot afternoon. Raptor sophomore goalie
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) made one save to earn her first shutout of the season. Dolphins sophomore keeper
Elizabeth Martin (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) had seven saves.
Rutgers-Camden scored the only goal it needed at 33:55 when sophomore midfielder/defender
Aubrey Andrews (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) chipped a ball into the right side of the box. Barbone ran onto the ball and chipped in her second goal of the season. She also had a goal and an assist over the weekend in two games at the Drew Fall Festival.
With time winding down, the Raptors struck again. Senior forward
Casandra Torres (Mt. Holly, NJ/Doane Academy) attacked from the left side of the box and laid off a pass across the top of the box for Barbone, who scored her second goal of the day.
Both teams return to action with home conference games on Saturday. The Scarlet Raptors face William Paterson University in a 1 p.m. NJAC game. The Dolphins play a 3 p.m. Skyline Conference game against The College of Old Westbury.
