MEDIA, Penn. (Oct. 16, 2016) – Three players picked up their first win of the season – with two of them notching their first career singles win – and the Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team won its first match of the year with a 6-3 victory at Penn State-Brandywine here Sunday afternoon.
The young Scarlet Raptors improved to 1-8 with their first victory since Sept. 5, 2015 when they defeated Rutgers-Newark, 5-4. The Nittany Lions fell to 1-5.
The Scarlet Raptors captured five of the six singles matches, including victories at fifth and sixth singles by freshman
Trinh Nguyen (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) and sophomore
Bryana Foxx-Parham (Richmond, VA/Armstrong), respectively. It was the first collegiate singles win for both players. Nguyen, a newcomer to the team, won 6-4, 6-3 at fifth singles. Foxx-Parham, who made her collegiate debut last season, captured her first collegiate win overall – singles or doubles – with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win at sixth singles.
Senior
Christine Abacan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) also notched her first victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at second singles.
The Raptors also earned wins from freshmen
Annalise Kipp (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) and
Danielle Lemma (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) at first and third singles, respectively. Kipp raised her singles mark to 4-5 this season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles. Lemma posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at third singles to raise her rookie year record to 6-3 in singles.
The results capped a big weekend for
Annalise Kipp and Lemma, who also won their singles matches and first doubles match on Saturday in a close 5-4 loss at Cedar Crest College.
The Raptors'
Millie Kipp (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), a senior in her first year playing collegiate tennis, nearly notched her first singles victory before dropping a tough 6-4, 2-6, 4-6 match at fourth singles.
Millie Kipp notched her first doubles victory on Saturday at Cedar Crest, teaming with Nguyen at third doubles. That was the first collegiate victory for both players.
The Raptors captured one of the three doubles matches, with
Annalise Kipp and Lemma posting an 8-0 victory at first doubles. Abacan and
Millie Kipp dropped a close 8-6 decision at second doubles and Nguyen teamed with Foxx-Parham at third doubles, losing by an 8-3 score.
Rutgers-Camden closes its season Saturday with a 12 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference home match against Kean University. Prior to the match, the Scarlet Raptors will honor their two departing players, Abacan and
