WILKES-BARRE, Penn. (Oct. 30, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball knew it needs to win two matches here Sunday to raise its record over .500 and qualify for a potential selection to the ECAC tournament.
The Scarlet Raptors did just that, rallying from a one-set deficit in both matches to defeat Penn State-Harrisburg, 3-1, and host Wilkes University, 3-1.
The sweep helps the Scarlet Raptors finish the regular season with a 16-15 record. They will wait until Nov. 7 to see if they earned a berth in the ECAC Championships.
Rutgers-Camden 3, Penn State-Harrisburg 1
After dropping the first set, 25-21, the Scarlet Raptors swept the next three sets by scores of 28-26, 25-18 and 25-16.
Junior
Cortnee Wilkerson (Los Angeles, CA/West Adams Prep) collected nine kills for the Raptors, while freshmen
Jordan Erskine (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) and sisters
Jamie Mulligan and
Morgan Mulligan (New Gretna, NJ/Pinelands Regional) drilled eight kills apiece.
Morgan Mulligan hit .500 and also added five service aces.
Sophomore
Myiah Gatling (Woolwich Township, NJ/Kingsway Regional) added six kills for the Scarlet Raptors.
Freshmen
Caitlin Marcano (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and
Meghan Gallagher (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) notched 24 and 11 assists apiece. Gallagher and senior
Caitlin Marchlowitz (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) both notched three service aces. Marchlowitz also collected a match-high 20 digs, while senior
Melanie Kaiser (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) added 18 digs.
Gatling and
Jamie Mulligan both had one solo block and two block assists.
Rutgers-Camden 3, Wilkes 1
After the Colonels posted a 25-12 victory in the opening set, the Scarlet Raptors bounced back again to post three consecutive 25-21 victories and take the match, 3-1.
Wilkerson had another stellar performance with 13 kills, while
Morgan Mulligan netted nine and both Gatling and Marchlowitz added seven apiece. Marchlowitz and Wilkerson both added two solo blocks.
Marcano had 27 assists and Kaiser collected 19 digs. Gallagher had 12 digs, Wilkerson notched 11 and freshman
Natalie DiGiacomo (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had 10.
