Raptors battle weather, top-notch competition at Knecht Cup

The 2016 Rutgers-Camden spring crew teams enjoy a lighter moment during their photo shoot
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (April 10, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Camden crew teams battled top-notch competition and the brutal weekend weather as they competed Saturday and Sunday at the Knecht Cup, which was  held on Mercer Lake in West Windsor.

On Sunday, the Scarlet Raptors closed the race when junior Phil Pilat (Woodbury, NJ/Cherry Hill East) led their Men's Single boat to a fifth-place finish out of six boats in the final in a time of 8:21.05. He was competing against mostly Division I teams in a race won by the University of Pittsburgh (7:40.56).

In Saturday's action on a cold day with snow and freezing rain, the Scarlet Raptors races three boats, including the Men's Varsity Four, which finished third of four in its heat (8:33.65) with a solid performance. The team, is looking forward to a rematch with Franklin & Marshall College at the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships April 30.

On the women's side, the Women's Varsity Pair of junior Melissa Price (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) and senior Olivia Rowland (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) placed fourth of six in its heat (8:56.08) and barely missed advancing to the final, finishing behind fast crews from Division I powers the University of Miami and the University of Massachusetts.

The Rutgers-Camden Women's Frosh/Novice Four was sixth of six in its heat (10:21.81), but its time was over two minutes faster than its MARC rival Stockton University, which was in a different heat.

Freshman Sean Jensen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) pulled double duty by filling the cox seat in both the Novice Women's 4 and the Men's Varsity 4 boats. He joined seniors Gregory Barry (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) and Geoffrey Chmura (Plainfield, NJ/Union Catholic Regional), junior Phil Pilat (Woodbury, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and sophomore Chris Licata (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) in the men's varsity 4+. The women's novice 4+ included juniors Tracy Austin (Haddon Township, NJ/Camden Catholic) and LeeAnn Still (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and freshmen Mia Di Lolle (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) and Veronica Rosselli (North Haledon, NJ/Paramus Catholic).

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday, April 16, when it rows in the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
