LEWISBERRY, Penn. (April 30, 2016) – It was quite a day for Rutgers University-Camden senior
Olivia Rowland (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and junior
Melissa Price (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) at the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Championships Saturday at Gifford Pinchot State Park.
Rutgers-Camden's women's team at the MARC Championships
Rowland and Price won their second straight MARC championship in the Women's Varsity Pair, defeating boats from Stony Brook University and Mary Washington to bring home the gold medal. The Scarlet Raptors' Pair posted a time of 8:32.33.
Rowland and Price also were two of six Scarlet Raptors earning all-conference recognition. The duo captured All-MARC Varsity honors, while junior
Tracy Austin (Haddon Township, NJ/Camden Catholic) captured All-MARC Novice recognition.
For the men's team, senior
Gregory Barry (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) and junior
Phil Pilat (Woodbury, NJ/Cherry Hill East) captured All-MARC Varsity honors and freshman
Sean Jensen (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) earned All-MARC Novice recognition.
The All-MARC honor was the third for Rowland, who was a Varsity Team member last year and earned Novice team recognition as a freshman. Price, meanwhile, was an All-Novice team member last spring.
Pilat was a MARC Varsity honoree last spring and an All-Novice Team member during the 2014 season.
In addition to the Women's Pair, the Women's Novice 4 brought home a silver medal. After barely qualifying for the finals as the fifth seed, and third in their heat (8:35.50), they led for almost 1,800 meters in the final before being edged out by Loyola, which posted a time of 8:08.7 to the Raptors' 8:14.3. On the men's side, Pilat and Barry finished third in the Men's Pair (8:05.61), while the Men's Varsity 4 finished fifth (7:39.48). Members of that team included Barry, Pilat, senior
Geoffrey Chmura (Plainfield, NJ/Union Catholic Regional), sophomore
Chris Licata (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) and coxswain Jensen.
