CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 4, 2017) – The calendar may read early October, but the Rutgers University-Camden and Haverford College men's soccer teams played their non-conference game here Wednesday night as if they were fighting to advance in the NCAA tournament.
After 110 minutes of non-stop intensity, the Scarlet Raptors and the Fords settled for a 0-0 double-overtime tie.
Rutgers-Camden, which stretched its unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2) with its best performance of the season, now stands at 5-5-3 overall. Haverford, which is ranked No. 25 nationally in this week's
D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, is 6-2-3, although the talented Fords are 0-1-2 in their last three games.
In a strong defensive battle, neither team had many good scoring opportunities in a game where Rutgers-Camden held a 15-14 edge in shots and Haverford had a 9-3 margin in corner kicks. Both teams had one yellow card and both junior goalkeepers – Rutgers-Camden's
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) and Haverford's
Jeremy Astesano (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) preserved their shutout with six and five saves, respectively.
Perhaps the best scoring opportunity came in the 15th minute when a shot by the Scarlet Raptors' senior midfielder
Clayton Taylor (Mendham, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) hit off the crossbar. Late in the game, the Raptors barely missed a few opportunities by senior forward
Aaron Muse (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) and junior midfielder
Vincenzo Masitti (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt).
Both teams had 11 shots through regulation. The Fords held a 2-1 shot advantage in the first overtime, while the Scarlet Raptors had a 3-1 advantage in the final 10 minutes. Haverford had the only two corner kicks in overtime, both coming in the final minute of the game.
With his 110 minutes played in goal, Brett became only the fourth player in program history to reach 5,000 career minutes in goal, hiking his total to 5,062:26. He moved up into third place on the all-time list, only 4:04 behind second-place David Cunningham (2003-06). His five saves also hiked his career total to 301, making him only the fifth player in program history to reach 300 career saves, and his ninth career tie moved him alone into second place on the career list, four behind Cunningham.
Brett also earned his 13th career shutout.
