GLENSIDE, Penn. (Nov. 12, 2017) – There's something about an ECAC tournament that brings out the best in the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer program.
The Scarlet Raptors continued to prove that point here Sunday afternoon as they defeated host Arcadia University, 2-0, in the ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinals to advance from Pod 3 to next Saturday's semifinals. The Raptors will face New York University (9-7-3) at 2 p.m., following a semifinal game between Grove City College and Lebanon Valley College. Lebanon Valley College will host the Final Four.
Rutgers-Camden, which entered the ECAC tournament as the second seed in Pod 3, improves to 10-8-4. Arcadia, the top seed in the pod, closes its season at 13-6-2.
The win gives the Scarlet Raptors an overall 14-4 record as they play in their ninth ECAC tournament in program history. They won ECAC titles in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2014.
The Scarlet Raptors scored the only goal they needed at 33:36. Three minutes after Raptor junior midfielder
Vincenzo Masitti (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) had a shot saved by Knights senior goalie
Chris Watson (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy), Masitti banged a shot off the post and into the net for his fifth goal of the year. The tally came one day after Masitti notched his team-leading seventh assist on the first goal of the Raptors' ECAC-opening 2-1 win over SUNY-Maritime.
Rutgers-Camden added an insurance tally at 53:47 when junior midfielder
Walter Barreto (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) took a deflection off a defender and buried his first career goal.
Rutgers-Camden out-shot Arcadia, 27-5, including a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Scarlet Raptors also held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Scarlet Raptors' offense forced Watson to make nine saves, while freshman keeper
Kollin White (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) also added a save in the Knights' net. Arcadia also had one backsave.
Rutgers-Camden junior goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) made two saves as he registered his second shutout of the season and the 14th of his career. The victory was his 31st career win.
The game also marked the 90th career contest at Rutgers-Camden for senior midfielder/forward
Brad Maine (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic). He becomes only the fifth player in program history to reach that milestone.
