EWING, N.J. (Sept. 27, 2017) – Over the years, men's soccer games at The College of New Jersey have usually been a nightmare for Rutgers University-Camden, so when the Scarlet Raptors surrendered an early penalty kick here Wednesday night, they could be excused if they dreamed that history was repeating.
Rutgers-Camden, however, was able to tie the game shortly before halftime and the two teams went on to post a double-overtime 1-1 tie in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
The tie leaves Rutgers-Camden at 3-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the NJAC. TCNJ stands at 4-4-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the conference.
TCNJ holds a 23-8-6 lead in the all-time series, but since the turn of the century, that series has certainly favored the home team. Rutgers-Camden hasn't won at TCNJ since a 2-1 victory on Sept. 24, 2003. Since then, the Scarlet Raptors have gone 0-4-4 on the Lions' pitch. In their last eight games against the Lions in Camden, however, the Raptors are 7-1, with the only loss coming in 2010 by a 2-1 score.
Midway through the opening half, the Lions were awarded a penalty kick. Junior midfielder
Joerg Jauk converted the kick for his first goal of the season.
With 37 seconds remaining before the break, however, the Scarlet Raptors pulled even on a goal by junior midfielder
Vincenzo Masitti (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt). His second goal of the season was assisted by freshman midfielder
Jawon Daniels (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township), who picked up his first career point.
The Raptors finished the game with a 16-13 edge in shots, but put 10 of them on goal, compared to the Lions' three. The Scarlet Raptors also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks, while three Lions received yellow cards.
Rutgers-Camden junior goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) made two saves and allowed only the penalty kick goal. For the Lions, freshman keeper
Michael Kayal collected nine saves.
By playing all 110 minutes, Brett hiked his career total for goalie minutes to 4,817:26, moving past Eric Gray's 4,797 minutes from 1995-97). Brett now stands fourth on the program's career list for goalie minutes. Third place is 5,048 minutes by Pete DeFeo (1984-87).
The Scarlet Raptors host Ramapo College Saturday at 1 p.m. in another NJAC game.
