Raptor women close season with ECAC loss at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, MD (Feb. 28, 2018) – The Stevenson University women's basketball team ran off 14 straight points in the first half to turn a three-point deficit into an 11-point lead here Wednesday night. The Mustangs went on to eliminate Rutgers University-Camden, 68-51, in a first-round game of the ECAC Division III Women's Basketball Championships.
 
Stevenson (17-11), the No. 2 seed in Pod 4 of the ECAC tournament, advances to Friday's quarterfinals held at Washington and Jefferson College. The Mustangs will play Springfield College at 2 p.m. Springfield defeated Brandeis University, 58-46, in another first-round game Wednesday.
 
Rutgers-Camden closes its campaign at 14-12 in a season which saw the Scarlet Raptors earn an ECAC bid for the third consecutive season, a first in program history. It was Rutgers-Camden's eighth ECAC tournament appearance overall. The Scarlet Raptors are now 8-6 overall in those eight trips to the tourney, including championships in 1992 and 1995.
 
The Scarlet Raptors broke to an early 11-8 lead, paced by a pair of three-pointers from junior guard Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell). Stevenson, however, rattled off the next 14 points, sparked by a field goal from junior guard Jonyae Curry (Finksburg, MD/Westminster). A field goal by senior guard Kristine Tennyson (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) put the Mustangs ahead to stay, 12-11. Before the run was finished, freshman guard Denia Campbell (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) had added back-to-back three-pointers.
 
Stevenson built its lead to 32-15 with 6:15 remaining in the second quarter before a 10-2 Rutgers-Camden run cut its deficit to 34-25. Five different Scarlet Raptors had two points apiece in that run.
 
The Mustangs led by as many as 20 points (49-29) in the second half before the Raptors chipped away. They narrowed narrowing their deficit down to eight points (59-51) on a three-pointer by Greene with 2:42 remaining, but couldn't get any closer.
 
Sophomore guard Hannah Crist (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) paced the Mustangs with 16 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-7 from three-point range. Curry notched a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Tennyson netted nine points and Campbell chipped in with eight.
 
The Mustangs shot 25-for-61 (41.0 percent) from the field, including 6-for-16 (37.5) on treys. They also held a commanding 47-32 advantage off the boards, blocked six shots and forced 24 turnovers.
 
Greene, pictured above, finished with a game-high 19 points for the Scarlet Raptors, including 4-for-10 shooting from three-point range as she finished her season with 73 treys and hiked her career program record to 207 three-pointers. She raised her career scoring output to 951 points, setting herself up to join the program's career 1,000-point club early in her senior year.
 
Senior forward/center Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) finished with 10 points on the night and 1,193 for her career. She finished eighth on the program's all-time scoring list, two points behind Brittany Turner (2009-13). She also finished her career with 103 games played, only one behind the program mark held by Tamara Carey (1991-95). Obasi added eight rebounds to close her career with 801, sixth on the all-time list. She also was 10th in steals (153) and 12th in assists (145).
 
Junior guard Ariel Robinson (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) netted eight points and freshman guard Shane Holmes (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added six points for the Scarlet Raptors.
 
Senior guard/forward Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) finished her career with seven rebounds and tied for game-high honors with four assists. She finished her four-year career playing in 101 games, scoring 909 points (18th), collecting 663 rebounds (eighth) and 307 steals (third), while setting the program's all-time assist mark with 503.
