CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 15, 2021) – Rutgers University-Camden senior defender
Christian McCartney (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week when the NJAC announced its final weekly honors for the men's soccer season.
McCartney earned the honor after scoring the game-winning goal in the ECAC Div. III Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinals on Saturday for a 1-0 overtime win against host Springfield College. The victory lifted the Scarlet Raptors into Sunday's semifinal game, where it lost to Muhlenberg College, 2-0.
McCartney's goal, with three minutes remaining in the first overtime period, was his first of the season. Earlier this year, he was named to the All-Cialella Soccer Classic tournament team (Sept. 11-12) and captured All-NJAC Honorable Mention recognition.
McCartney scored six points during the 2021 season on one goal and four assists. He started 18 games while playing in all 20 contests for the 9-9-2 Scarlet Raptors.
McCartney started his collegiate career at NJAC rival William Paterson University in 2018. He played his first season at Rutgers-Camden during the pandemic-altered "2020" campaign, which was played in the spring semester of 2021. He earned NJAC Honorable Mention that season as well, appearing in all seven Raptor games during the brief season.
Overall, McCartney has played in all 27 games during his two years at Rutgers-Camden, starting 24.
A Dean's List student as a Marketing major, McCartney also has earned plenty of academic honors. He captured NJAC Academic Honorable Mention for the 2020-21 scholastic year. He also was named to the Rutgers-Camden Athletic Director's Honor Roll during both of his semesters that year.
