NEW YORK, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2021) – The Baruch College men's basketball team opened up a 10-point halftime lead and Rutgers University-Camden never got closer than seven points the rest of the way as the Bearcats beat the Scarlet Raptors, 70-57, in non-conference action here Tuesday night.
Baruch improves to 4-3, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 0-6.
The first half was close most of the way, with five tie scores and four lead changes. Deadlocked at 21-21, however, Baruch ran off five straight points, 10 of the next 12 and 14 of the last 18 points on its way to a 35-25 halftime lead. Graduate student guard Liam Sanborn put the Bearcats ahead to stay, 22-21, with a free throw. Senior guard/forward Adnan Bajrami followed with seven of the next nine points on his way to 11 points at halftime.
Junior guard
Tavian Alford had seven first-half points for Rutgers-Camden, while sophomore guard
Gavin Henry had six rebounds. The Scarlet Raptors shot 9-for-28 from the floor in the opening half, including 2-for-12 from three-point range. Baruch shot 16-for-35 and 2-for-9, respectively.
In the second half, the Raptors cut their deficit to seven points on four occasions early in the frame, with the last coming at 43-36. The Bearcats, however, opened up a double-digit lead and stretched it to as many as 18 points (70-52) late in the game.
Sophomore forward Mohamed Gueye paced Baruch with 15 points, while Bajrami netted 13 and sophomore guard Jehmehl Fair added 11 points and six boards. Sophomore guard/forward Jack Meyers had seven rebounds to lead the Bearcats to a 41-33 advantage off the glass.
Alford scored 13 points and added six rebounds for Rutgers-Camden. Sophomore forwards
Tristan Cornish and
Jordan Carter scored 10 points apiece for the Scarlet Raptors. Henry grabbed seven rebounds and added four assists.
Rutgers-Camden shot 22-for-59 (37.3) from the field, while Baruch went 30-for-63 (47.6).
The Scarlet Raptors return to action immediately with an 8 p.m. conference game Wednesday night. They host The College of New Jersey.
