TCNJ tops Rutgers-Camden in NJAC lacrosse

EWING, N.J. (April 17, 2021) – Junior attack Jennifer LaRocca collected four goals and five assists, while senior midfielder Erin Jaffe added five goals to power The College of New Jersey lacrosse team over Rutgers University-Camden, 19-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
 
The victory lifts the Lions to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 0-2 and 0-2.
 
TCNJ built a 13-0 halftime lead, outshooting the Scarlet Raptors, 22-0, in the opening period. The Lions finished with a 36-3 advantage in shots.
 
TCNJ scored 38 seconds into the game on a tally by sophomore midfield/attack Anna Wright and added another goal only 46 seconds later by sophomore midfielder Jillian Westerby. Westerby finished with three goals, while Wright (two goals, two assists) and sophomore midfield/attack Wayden Ay (two goals) also added multiple goals for the Lions. Sophomore attack Veronika O'Donnell collected five points with one goal and four assists.
 
The Rutgers-Camden goalie combination of senior Brittany Watson and freshman Gina Bellon faced a total of 36 shots, with Watson allowing 13 goals and Bellon surrendering six. Watson made five saves and Bellon had six.
 
Rutgers-Camden managed only three shots against TCNJ goalies Alexa Natalicchio and Julia Charest, with two of the shots by freshman attack Linsey Becker. The Raptors' lone goal was scored with 16:21 remaining in the game by freshman midfielder Isabella Tamburrino, assisted by junior midfielder Claire Gailliout. It was the second career goal for Tamburrino and the first assist of the season for Gailliout. Gailliout owns 19 career assists, ninth on the program's all-time list and only one behind the tie for seventh place between two players.
 
Watson paced the Scarlet Raptors with four ground balls, while Gailliout and junior defender Rachel Green had two apiece. Gailliout also added one caused turnover and had one draw control. Junior defender Breeanna Stauss added one ground ball and one caused turnover, while junior attack Claire McKernan notched one draw control.
 
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday, April 24, at 4 p.m. with a conference game at Stockton University.
