CAMDEN, N.J. (April 21, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden lacrosse team has only been able to play three games in the pandemic-altered 2021 season. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raptors, two of them have come against conference opponents that are nationally-ranked in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III poll.
The 24th-ranked Montclair State University Red Hawks received goals from 11 different players as they defeated Rutgers-Camden, 22-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
Montclair State improves to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the NJAC, a record that also includes a one-goal win over current 14th-ranked The College of New Jersey. TCNJ defeated the Scarlet Raptors, 19-1, on April 17.
The contest was the final home game for the Scarlet Raptors, who honored their lone senior, goalkeeper
Brittany Watson, in a pre-game ceremony. A four-year starter, Watson entered the day as the program's all-time leader with 308 saves, and made 10 more while playing the first half, in which the Red Hawks outscored the Scarlet Raptors, 15-2. She faced 26 shots in that first half, hiking her career total to 1,052. She is three shots shy of the program record set by Rachel Powell (2010-12).
Montclair State senior midfielder Brittany Costigan scored 48 seconds into the game. By the time the game ended, senior attack Megan Mahlstadt had four goals and three assists for the Red Hawks, while senior midfielder Clare Eckels, senior midfielder Tristin Konen and junior midfielder Maeve Carney all had three goals. Konen added three assists. Two other Red Hawks – sophomore midfielder Julia Egan and senior midfielder Michaelah Reynolds – had two goals apiece, with Reynolds adding one assist.
After Montclair State scored the first three goals, Raptor junior midfielder
Claire Gailliout scored the first of her two goals on the day, assisted by junior midfielder
Jazmin Torres. By the time she scored again, the goal made it an 11-2 game.
Montclair State held a 39-7 advantage in shots and outscored the Raptors, 7-0, in the second half. Freshman goalie
Gina Bellon played the second half for the Raptors, making two saves. Senior keeper Allyn Lilien had five saves for the Red Hawks.
Rutgers-Camden plays its last regular-season game Saturday with a 4 p.m. NJAC contest at Stockton University. The Ospreys took Montclair State to overtime April 17 before losing, 14-13.
