UNION, N.J. (April 24, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team rallied from a four-run deficit in the second game of a doubleheader here Saturday as it earned a split with Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
The Cougars pounded out 14 hits in the opening game on their way to a 13-5 victory. The Scarlet Raptors took the nightcap, 5-4, after trailing, 4-0, entering the fifth inning.
The split leaves Rutgers-Camden with an 8-12 record overall and a 7-7 mark in the NJAC. Kean stands at 13-10 overall and 8-6 in the conference.
The Scarlet Raptors return to NJAC action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. with a game in Ewing at The College of New Jersey.
Kean 13, Rutgers-Camden 5
Rutgers-Camden scored a pair of runs in both the second and third innings and led, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior left fielder
Garrett Warner had a sacrifice fly and sophomore shortstop
Danny Vazquez hit a RBI double in the second inning for Rutgers-Camden, while senior third baseman
Matt Yanick ripped a two-run home run, his sixth homer of the season, in the third.
The Cougars took advantage of two hits and three errors in the sixth inning to score three runs, taking the lead for good at 6-3. A nightmare inning followed in the seventh for the Scarlet Raptors as Kean scored seven times, aided by six hits and two walks to Kean senior left fielder Timothy Huxen. The Cougars sent 12 men to the plate and capped their frame with a two-run ground rule double by freshman second baseman Christian Pellone.
Junior right fielder Kyle Harrington led Kean's 14-hit attack with a 3-for-5 game, scoring three times and driving home one.
Vazquez went 2-for-2 with one RBI and two walks for the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden 5, Kean 4
Kean grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning and added another run in the third. The Cougars were up, 4-0, before Rutgers-Camden scored twice in the fifth inning, sparked by a single from Yanick and a double by junior center fielder
Brett Yurgin. Sophomore second baseman
Jack Murphy doubled down the left field line to plate both runs.
The Scarlet Raptors tied the game with another two-spot in the seventh inning. Yanick doubled and Murphy was hit by a pitch. Freshman catcher
Nick Sylvester singled to left, scoring Yanick when the ball was misplayed for an error. After junior right fielder
Rob Scanlan was hit by a pitch, freshman third baseman
Auggie Uzdanovics delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly.
The Raptors plated the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth inning after junior designated hitter
Jesse Gerdes led off with a single. He eventually scored on a double by Yurgin.
Sophomore
Dylan Wichrowski earned the win for his first decision of the season, raising his career record to 2-0. He worked seven innings of eight-hit ball, allowing four runs (three earned) and two walks. He struck out three. Junior
Nick Listro finished off the game with two perfect innings, striking out one, to earn his second save of the season and second save in three games. He also notched a save Thursday at Stockton University.
For the day, Yanick went 3-for-7 with four runs, a double, a home run and two RBIs. Yurgin went 3-for-8 with one run, one RBI and two doubles.
Vazquez had two hits in the opener before his 11-game hitting streak (21-for-41, .512) was snapped in the nightcap. His streak was the longest on the team this season.
