TCNJ defeats Rutgers-Camden on Raptors' Senior Day

EWING, N.J. (April 30, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team was forced to celebrate its Senior Day on the field of its opponent, as the Scarlet Raptors are playing all their "home" games on the road this season as they await the completion of their new stadium.

The oddity of a road game Senior Day celebration continued once the contest started as The College of New Jersey rallied from a four-run fourth-inning deficit to defeat the Scarlet Raptors, 17-11, here Friday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.

The loss was the second tough defeat in as many days at TCNJ and dropped the Scarlet Raptors to 8-14 overall and 7-9 in the NJAC. The Lions improved to 6-10 in the conference and 7-14 overall.

Prior to the game, the Scarlet Raptors recognized their eight seniors: Mike Calabrese, R.J. Concepcion, Billy Eisler, Thomas Gosse, Keith Jacobs, Mike Lavenia, Rob Scanlan and Matt Yanick.

TCNJ, batting as the visiting team, jumped out to a quick three-run lead on four hits in the top of the first inning, but Rutgers-Camden battled back, scoring eight runs from the second through the fourth innings. In the two-run second inning, the Scarlet Raptors collected three hits and plated runs on a RBI fielder's choice by freshman third baseman Auggie Uzdanovics and a run-scoring single by catcher Gosse.

Rutgers-Camden added three more runs in the third inning on only one hit. Junior second baseman Jesse Gerdes had a two-run single, while Gosse was hit by a pitch to force home another run. In a three-run fourth inning, Yanick drilled a two-run home run and Gosse singled home his third RBI of the day. Yanick's home run was his seventh of the season and 17th for his career, ranking him third on both the program's season and career lists.

Suddenly, Rutgers-Camden held an 8-4 lead, but the advantage didn't last for long. TCNJ sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run fifth inning, sparked by a leadoff home run from freshman designated hitter Ryan Goodall. It was the first of two home runs on the day for Goodall, who drilled a three-run home run in the seventh inning and also added a RBI single in the ninth. He finished the day 3-for-5 with three runs and five RBIs.

TCNJ scored eight runs from the seventh inning on. Rutgers-Camden added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Yanick and tacked on two more runs in the ninth on a two-run single by Scanlan.

In addition to Goodall, senior Aydon Chavis went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs in the Lions' 16-hit attack.

Yanick and Gosse both had three RBIs for the Raptors, while Gerdes went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Scanlan was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Gosse and junior right fielder Brett Yurgin both had two hits.
