MADISON, NJ (Sept. 4, 2021) – When the Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team competed during the pandemic-altered spring semester, a trio of players on the current roster weren't with the team.
Sophomore
Sarah Ahrens was at Camden County College, while Raptor veterans
Morgan Dempsey and
Laurel DiStefano opted not to play in the shortened season.
All three players made their 2021-22 scholastic debuts here Saturday, joining the rest of a talented Rutgers-Camden roster, as the Scarlet Raptors defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, 7-2.
The Raptors won all their matches except the first singles and doubles match, while the third doubles and sixth singles competitions were won by forfeit.
Sophomore
Samantha Hoban posted a 6-4, 6-1 decision at second singles, while senior
Tiffany Trivers won at third singles (6-2, 6-3). DiStefano, a junior, posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles and Dempsey, a senior, won at the fifth spot by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Senior
LeAnne Hall won by forfeit at the sixth spot.
Ahrens dropped a tight 6-3, 1-6, 8-10 decision at first singles and combined with Trivers for an 8-3 win at second doubles. The team of Dempsey and Hall won by forfeit in the third doubles spot.
Hoban and DiStefano lost at first doubles, 8-3.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Sunday with an 11 a.m. match at Immaculata University.
