EWING, N.J. (Jan. 26, 2022) – When The College of New Jersey opened its men's basketball game against Rutgers-University Camden here Wednesday night, the Lions had red-hot shooting hands. The Scarlet Raptors, however, clawed their way back into the game before TCNJ recovered and went on to post a 72-47 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-14 overall and 1-11 in the NJAC, while TCNJ improves to 7-8 and 4-8. The Lions have won their last 15 games against Rutgers-Camden and hold a 73-18 lead in the all-time series.
Behind a flurry of five three-pointers, the Lions raced to a quick 21-4 lead before the Scarlet Raptors rallied. A 16-3 Rutgers-Camden run, sparked by five straight points from junior guard/forward
Chad Vickers, cut the Raptors' deficit to 24-20. The Lions responded with seven straight points to make it a 31-20 game on the way to opening up a 40-26 halftime lead.
The Raptors never managed to get closer than 10 points (42-32 and 45-35) in the second half.
Senior forward Danny Bodine paced the Lions with 20 points and added nine rebounds, while junior guard Anthony DiCaro notched 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. Junior guard/forward Jason Larranaga scored 11 points and junior forward Jim Clemente grabbed 11 rebounds for TCNJ.
Rutgers-Camden received 11 points and five rebounds from sophomore forward
Tristan Cornish, while sophomore guard
Gavin Henry added 10 points and freshman guard
Andrew Walker scored nine.
TCNJ shot 26-for-56 (46.4 percent) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden shot 18-for-54 (33.3). The Lions buried 11 treys in 28 attempts (39.3) while the Scarlet Raptors went 7-for-24 (29.2) from beyond the arc. TCNJ also held a commanding 48-18 advantage off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday, hosting Rutgers-Newark in a 3 p.m. NJAC game.
