Rutgers-Camden splits volleyball tri-match at Goucher

BALTIMORE, MD. (Oct. 22, 2022) – Throughout the 2022  season, senior setter Brinn Hassan has been chasing history.
 
Now she's on the doorstep of catching it.
 
Hassan collected 62 assists here Saturday as the Scarlet Raptors split a tri-match at Goucher College, moving to within one assist of tying the program record of 2,692 assists, held by Stephanie Miller (2009-12). Hassan will get her shot at breaking the record Tuesday night when the Scarlet Raptors play their final New Jersey Athletic Conference match of the regular season with a trip to Stockton University for a 7 p.m. start.
 
Rutgers-Camden lost its opener on Saturday against Roanoke College, 3-0 (13-25, 17-25 and 17-25. They won their second match against the home team, Goucher College, by a 3-0 score (25-17, 27-25, 30-28).
 
In the other match of the day, Roanoke beat Goucher, 3-1.
 
The results leave Rutgers-Camden with a 13-13 record. Roanoke improves to 12-11 and Goucher falls to 4-20.

The Maroons used 12 kills and a .346 hitting percentage fro sophomore right side Rylee Mayer and 23 assists from sophomore setter Kylee Draper to power their sweep.
 
Rutgers-Camden was led by seven kills apiece from junior middle hitter/outside hitter Isabella Choice and junior outside hitter Dyamond Free. Freshman defensive specialist/Ciera McCrae had six kills and sophomore middle hitter/right side Kaitlyn Parrish added five.
 
Hassan led the team with 23 assists, while senior libero/defensive specialist Morgan Fox notched eight digs. Free added seven digs and McCrae added six.
 
Choice had two of the team's five service aces.

Although the Scarlet Raptors swept Goucher, the last two sets were marathon victories. With the second set score deadlocked at 25-25, a kill by Choice and a service ace by freshman libero/defensive specialist Bella Craig helped the Raptors clinch a 27-25 win.
 
In the third set, Rutgers-Camden rallied from a 21-24 deficit to tie the game at 25-25 on a kill by Choice. The Scarlet Raptors and Gophers traded scores until it was 28-28, when Rutgers-Camden wrapped up the win with kills by McCrae and Choice. Hassan assisted both kills.
 
For the match, Choice set a three-match program record with 21 kills, while hitting .581. She passed the previous mark of 17, which was accomplished by both Joy Silver (Oct. 19, 2002 vs. Manhattanville College) and Julie Grochowski (Oct. 14, 2008 vs. Rowan University).
 
McCrae added 10 kills for the Raptors, while Hassan collected 39 assists, the second-highest three-set match total in program history. She holds the record with 43 against William Paterson University, set during the Covid-altered season on March 2, 2021.
 
Craig led the team with four aces and added 12 digs, one behind team leader Fox. Senior defensive specialist Haley Novak added 11 digs, while McCrae had nine and Hasson collected eight.
