CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 14, 2022) – Junior guard/forward Austin Manley shot 6-for-9 from three-point range on his way to a game-high 20 points to lead the North Carolina Wesleyan College men's basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 76-47, in non-conference action here Wednesday night.
The Battling Bishops improved to 7-3 with their fourth straight win, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 2-9.
After trailing by as many as 13 points (26-13 and 28-15) in the first half, the Scarlet Raptors cut into the North Carolina Wesleyan lead with a 9-1 run, including back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore guard
Kobe Devine and sophomore forward
Jordany Pierre. That cut the gap to 29-24 with 2:30 remaining in the first half, but the Battling Bishops responded with a 9-3 run to make it a 38-27 game at halftime. They outscored the Scarlet Raptors, 38-20, in the second half and led by as many as 30 points (72-42).
In addition to Manley, senior guard Brayden Dixon and junior guard Khalid Chavis-Hinds scored 10 points apiece. Senior forward Isaiah Lewis and junior forward Kyron Kelly both had nine points, while Lewis and senior forward Sal-Bey Young both collected nine rebounds.
The Battling Bishops also blocked nine Rutgers-Camden shots, including two apiece by four different players.
Freshman forward
Cameron Downs paced the Scarlet Raptors with 13 points, while Pierre added seven. Downs and sophomore forward
Brandyn Stafford led the team with five rebounds apiece.
The Battling Bishops, who started a pair of 6-7 players and brought another off the bench, held a 45-27 advantage off the boards.
North Carolina Wesleyan shot 32-for-64 (50.0 percent) from the floor while holding Rutgers-Camden to 14-for-44 (31.8) shooting.
The game was the last contest for Rutgers-Camden until after the holidays. The Scarlet Raptors return to action Friday, December 30, with a 3 p.m. non-conference game at Baruch College.
