LEESBURG, Florida. (March 19, 2022) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team closed its spring break trip to Florida here Saturday by rallying from a 5-3 deficit to defeat Keuka College, 7-5.
The Scarlet Raptors scored two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to pull out the victory and raise their record to 8-7 as they head back to Camden. The Scarlet Raptors, who return to action Tuesday when they host Alvernia University, posted a 4-3 record on their southern trip.
After Keuka broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, Rutgers-Camden bounced back to answer. Freshman right fielder
Frankie Romond drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Junior shortstop
Danny Vazquez walked and stole second and senior designated hitter
R.J. McGettigan walked to load the bases. Junior catcher
Jake Guglielmi singled up the middle to drive home the tying runs.
The Scarlet Raptors broke that deadlock an inning later, sparked when senior shortstop
Jesse Gerdes was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Freshman center fielder
Chris Bonafiglia reached on an error and Romond walked to load the bases. After a fielder's choice forced Gerdes at home, McGettigan hit a two-run single to center field, plating the eventual winning runs.
In the back-and-forth game, Rutgers-Camden scored a first-inning run on a passed ball, Keuka scored twice in the third to take the lead, and the Scarlet Raptors tied the game at 2-2 on a fourth-inning error. The Wolves and Raptors swapped fifth-inning runs, with Gerdes driving home the Rutgers-Camden run on a single, knotting the score at 3-3.
Sophomore southpaw
Zachary Cerveny, the third Rutgers-Camden pitcher, picked up the victory with three scoreless innings. Cerveny (1-1) allowed two hits and two walks, while striking out one.
McGettigan, Guglielmi and Gerdes had two hits apiece for the Scarlet Raptors.
