CAMDEN, N.J. (March 26, 2022) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team opened its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule here Saturday, and the Scarlet Raptors continued their remarkable run of success during the 2021-22 season.
Rutgers-Camden swept William Paterson University, 9-0, as the Raptors raised their dual match record to 11-0 overall, while getting off to a 1-0 start in NJAC play. William Paterson falls to 0-1 and 0-1.
The win marked the Scarlet Raptors' fifth straight sweep and sixth overall this season, dating back to last fall. It also lifted Rutgers-Camden to 6-5 overall in 11 all-time matches against the Pioneers. The Raptors have won their last five meetings in the head-to-head series.
Rutgers-Camden took a quick 3-0 lead by sweeping its three doubles matches. The first doubles team of sophomore
Sarah Ahrens and senior
Tiffany Trivers posted an 8-0 victory, raising their dual match record as a team to a spotless 10-0. The second doubles team of sophomore
Samantha Hoban and junior
Laurel DiStefano also posted and 8-0 win, while the third doubles team of seniors
LeAnne Hall and
Morgan Dempsey won, 8-1, while making program history in the process. Dempsey and Hall, who are 10-0 in dual match play, also went 2-1 as a team during the Goucher Invitational last fall, giving them 12 doubles wins apiece this season. Not only are the 12 doubles wins in one season the most by any individual in Rutgers-Camden history, by the pair also became the winningest doubles pair in single-season program history. They had been tied at 11 victories with the teams of Amanda Hickman and Morgan Kelly (2012-13) and Kelsey Mercer and Amy Tung (2013-14).
Rutgers-Camden also swept singles play, with Ahrens winning at the top spot (6-0, 6-0), Hoban taking the victory at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-1) and both Trivers and DiStefano posting 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at the third and fourth singles spots, respectively. At fifth singles, Hall rallied to outlast Paterson's Erica Hickey, 4-6, 6-0, 10-8. Dempsey won a 6-0, 6-1 decision at sixth singles.
With her win at second singles, Hoban raised her dual match record to 11-0 this season.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Thursday when it entertains Ramapo College at 3:30 p.m. in another NJAC match.
