EWING, N.J. (April 2, 2022) – After winning its first 11 dual matches this season, the Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team ran into the buzzsaw of a national powerhouse, known as The College of New Jersey Lions here Saturday.
TCNJ, which has won every New Jersey Athletic Conference women's tennis title since the league started in 1982, defeated Rutgers-Camden, 9-0, in a NJAC match.
The Lions improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC, with the lone loss coming against a Division I opponent. Rutgers-Camden falls to 11-1 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC.
The Lions opened their day by sweeping the three doubles matches. Sophomore
Sarah Ahrens and senior
Tiffany Trivers lost at first doubles, 8-0, and sophomore
Samantha Hoban and junior
Laurel DiStefano dropped an 8-2 decision at second doubles. At third doubles, seniors
LeAnne Hall and
Morgan Dempsey lost, 8-1.
The Raptors also were swept in their six singles matches, with Ahrens losing at the top flight (6-2, 6-2), Hoban being defeating at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Trivers dropping a match at third singles (6-0, 602). In the fourth spot, DiStefano was defeated (6-0, 6-0), while Hall lost at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-1) and Dempsey was defeated at the sixth flight (6-3, 6-1).
Rutgers-Camden was supposed to host New Jersey City University on Sunday, but the match has been postponed due to the weather forecast. As a result, the Scarlet Raptors' next scheduled match is Friday when they host Ursinus College in a 3:30 p.m. makeup match. That match had been rescheduled from a March 24 postponement.
