CAMDEN, N.J. (March 8, 2022) – The Wilson College baseball team came to Camden with an undefeated record, receiving votes toward the pre-season Collegiate Baseball Top 40 poll.
The Phoenix left with their first two losses of the season as Rutgers-Camden won a 6-5 eight-inning game in the scheduled seven-inning opener. The Raptors completed their sweep with a seven-run fifth inning in the darkness-shortened nightcap to win 10-4.
Rutgers-Camden evens its record at 4-4, snapping a four-game losing streak. It was the Raptor' second home doubleheader sweep of the season, following a sweep of SUNY-Oneonta on Feb. 27.
Wilson falls to 7-2.
The Scarlet Raptors begin their spring break trip to Florida with a 5 p.m. game against Westfield State (Mass.) University on Saturday.
Rutgers-Camden 6, Wilson 5 (8 innings)
Rutgers-Camden appeared to have the opening game under control, but Wilson rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. The Phoenix used four hits and a walk in the frame.
Rutgers-Camden plated the winning run in the bottom of the eighth after senior left fielder
Garrett Warner drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by freshman catcher
Andrew Brown. Following an error and a strikeout, freshman right fielder
Frankie Romond loaded the bases with a single and junior second baseman
Danny Vazquez found the right-center field gap with a game-winning single.
Romond went 4-for-4 with one run in the game, while junior first baseman
Jack Murphy was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the third inning. Vazquez finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and the game-winning RBI.
Senior
Ethan Pritchett, the last of three Raptor hurlers, picked up the victory. Pritchett (1-0) worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, striking out two.
Junior catcher Michael Marrale went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI to lead the 14-hit Wilson attack.
Rutgers-Camden 10, Wilson 4 (5 innings)
The Scarlet Raptors rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in a game that was called after five innings due to darkness.
Trailing, 4-3, entering the bottom of the fifth, the Scarlet Raptors loaded the bases with one out on singles by Murphy and Warner
, followed by a walk to Brown. One out later, senior designated hitter
R.J. McGettigan drew an RBI walk to tie the game and sophomore third baseman
Dustin Bellis was hit by a pitch to force home the go-ahead run. Vazquez followed with a two-run single and Romond greeted the third Wilson pitcher of the inning with an RBI single. Senior shortstop
Jesse Gerdes capped the explosion with a two-run double.
The rally made a winner of sophomore
Dylan Wichrowski, who worked 3.1 innings in relief, allowing four hits, one walk and two earned runs. Wichrowski (1-0) struck out one.
The game was a lot closer than the final score. Wilson scored twice in the top of the second inning on three hits, including back-to-back doubles by Marrale and senior right fielder Gerald Buchanan and an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Brady Andre.
The Scarlet Raptors bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the frame as Murphy singled, Brown drew a one-out walk and sophomore center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics singled to load the bases. McGettigan followed with a game-tying two-run single and Bellis brought home the go-ahead run with a bunt single.
That 3-2 lead held up until the top of the fifth, when Wilson scored twice on three hits, including an RBI single by Marrale, and a run-scoring wild pitch.
Murphy finished the game going 3-for-3 with two runs, while Warner and Gerdes both went 2-for-4. Gerdes, Bellis and Vazquez had two RBIs apiece. McGettigan went 1-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs.
Marrale and Andre had two hits apiece for Wilson.
