Big Stockton run spoils Raptors' NJAC upset bid

CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 25, 2023) – With five minutes gone in the second half, the Rutgers University-Camden men's basketball team had whittled the lead of powerful Stockton University down to two points here Wednesday night.

The Ospreys responded with a 16-point run and went on to post a 75-49 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.

Stockton, which is tied with Montclair State for second place in the NJAC, improves to 16-3 overall and 10-2 in the conference. The Ospreys have won their last 30 games against the Scarlet Raptors and lead the all-time series, 84-8.

Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-16 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

Although Stockton led by eight points (33-25) at halftime and opened up a 12-point lead (37-25) early in the second half, Rutgers-Camden rattled off 10 straight points to make it a 37-35 game. Freshman forward Cameron Downs scored five points in the run, while sophomore guard Eric Benjamin added three. The basket that cut the margin to a two-point gap came on a jumper by sophomore forward Jordany Pierre.

Stockton didn't take long to burst the Raptors' bubble of momentum. The Ospreys hit three straight treys, including two by senior guard Kyion Flanders, to spark a 16-point run, ballooning the score to 53-35. They opened up a lead as large as 28 points (75-47) late in the game.

Flanders and junior guard DJ Campbell scored 14 points apiece to lead five Ospreys in double figures. Senior forward Jonathan Azoroh had 13 points, while senior guards Kadian Dawkins and Milo De Los Santos both added 12.

Sophomore guard Jordan Trusty-Smith, playing for the first time since Dec. 10 after returning from an injury, scored 13 points for the Scarlet Raptors, while Benjamin added nine. Pierre hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds and added seven points.

Stockton shot 28-for-51 (54.9 percent) from the floor and Rutgers-Camden went 18-for-52 (34.6). The Ospreys held a 33-32 edge off the boards.
