CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 3, 2024) – Junior guard
Eric Benjamin collected his first Rutgers-Camden double-double with 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, while adding a career-high five assists, to help power the Scarlet Raptors over Penn State-Berks, 112-78, here Wednesday.
The victory was the third straight for the Scarlet Raptors, who improved to 7-6. It was their first three-game winning streak since November 10-23, 2019.
The 112 points tied for the sixth-highest point total in program history and marked the Raptors' first time over the century mark since a 104-101 overtime loss against Rowan University on January 24, 2018.
Berks falls to 2-10 with its fifth straight loss.
Rutgers-Camden never trailed in the game and rolled up 61 points in the opening 20 minutes to take a 61-43 halftime lead. Benjamin had 14 points in the opening half, while sophomore forward
Cameron Downs and graduate student guard
Javon Gordon notched 11 apiece.
Rutgers-Camden passed the 100-point mark with 2:22 remaining in the game on a trey by senior guard
Patrick Campbell to make the score 101-74.
The Scarlet Raptors finished with four players in double figures, led by Downs with 20, Gordon with 19 and Benjamin with 18. Sophomore forward
Cherif Kanoute added 15 points, while junior guard
Jordan Trusty-Smith tied Benjamin with a game-high five assists.
Benjamin's previous Raptor highs were five rebounds, accomplished three times, and four assists against Montclair State on Dec. 2.
Gordon had a game-high four steals.
Rutgers-Camden shot 44-for-72 (61.1 percent) from the floor, while Berks went 24-for-57 (42.1). The Raptors dominated the boards, 45-22.
The Scarlet Raptors return to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. home game against NJAC-leading Ramapo College.
