Rowan women outlast Rutgers-Camden

Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. – Junior guard Bria Hill (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) collected a game-tying jumper with 6:37 remaining and added a three-pointer moments later, sparking a nine-point run to lift the Rowan University women's basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 56-47, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.

The Profs improve to 5-14 overall and 4-8 in the NJAC, sweeping the season series with the Scarlet Raptors. Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-13 overall and 0-12 in the NJAC.

In a second half that featured three ties and four lead changes, the Scarlet Raptors were clinging to a 38-36 lead before Hill tied the game with a jumper. Less than a minute later, she tacked on a trey, and Rowan closed out its run with a pair of field goals by freshman guard Valerie Garofalo (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit), making it a 45-38 game. Rutgers-Camden never came closer than 45-40 the rest of the way. The Profs sealed their victory with eight foul shots in the last two minutes, including four by Garofalo.

The Scarlet Raptors took a quick 10-3 lead in the game, aided by eight early points from sophomore guard Falecia Galindez (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) before the Profs started to chip away. Rowan went on an eight-point run to grab a 16-13 advantage, taking the lead at 14-13 on a layup by Garofalo. They led, 25-22, at halftime, placing seven players in the scoring column, led by freshman guard Anyssa Sanchez (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) with six points.

Galindez had 11 first-half points for the Scarlet Raptors, while junior guard/forward Irene Grimanis (Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) had 11 rebounds at the break.

Rutgers-Camden went on a 7-2 run out of the break, taking their first lead of the second half, 29-27, on a reverse layup by sophomore guard Krystle Cook (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College). After Rowan regained the advantage, 36-35, Cook hit a three-point play to give the Raptors their last lead of the night, 38-36, and set the stage for Hill and the Profs' nine-point run.

Hill finished with 11 points for the Profs, while Sanchez added nine in the balanced attack.

Rutgers-Camden received 13 points from Cook, 12 from Galindez and 11 from junior center Tanjae Lewis (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling). Lewis also added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double this season.

The Scarlet Raptors dominated the boards, 65-43, behind an outstanding night from Grimanis, who had a career-high 20 rebounds. Her previous high of 15 also came against Rowan, on Jan. 25, 2012. Grimanis had 11 offensive rebounds and nine defensive boards, while also adding three points and two assists.

Sophomore forward Michelle Onu (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) added 17 rebounds for the Raptors, three shy of her career high. Onu also contributed eight points, three steals and four blocked shots.
