Box Score NEWARK, N.J. – The Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team entered Saturday night's showdown with sister school Rutgers-Newark still in mathematical contention for a berth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs.
The Scarlet Raptors' post-season hopes ended, however, when the Scarlet Raiders scored a pair of first-half goals and went on to post a 3-1 victory. The win lifts Rutgers-Newark to 12-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 6-10-1 and 2-6.
With six points entering the day and trailing both Newark and Kean University by four points, Rutgers-Camden needed a victory over the Scarlet Raiders and at least a tie in their final game of the season Wednesday, when they host Richard Stockton College at 7 p.m. They also needed Newark to lose its final game against nationally-ranked NJAC leader Montclair State University.
The Scarlet Raiders, however, wrote a different script as they qualified for the NJAC playoffs for the first time in their 15-year history. Junior midfielder
Cristina Estremera (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) notched her eighth goal of the season at 29:53, settling the ball and firing a shot from outside the box into the upper left corner.
Four minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders struck again as sophomore forward
Paige Lazar (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) collected her eight goal, touching a shot inside the left post off a bouncing cross from the far side by junior midfielder
Sara Corson (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen). Rutgers-Camden cut the gap to 2-1 at 50:23 when sophomore back
Mandi Noll (Blackwood, NJ/Triton Regional) scored her first goal of the season on a 23-yard free kick into the upper left side of the net. Newark, however, countered with a goal by Corson, her 16th of the season, at 54:01, heading in a chip into the box by freshman midfielder
Sabrina Solorzano (Iselin, NJ/Timothy Christian School). Only 1:41 later, a second yellow card on a Rutgers-Newark player made the Scarlet Raiders play shorthanded for the final 34:19 of the game. Rutgers-Camden, however, wasn't able to capitalize as Newark finished with a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
Scarlet Raptor sophomore
Angela Martorano (Gloucester Township, NJ/Triton Regional) made six saves in goal, while Newark split the game between senior
Diana Aviles (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) and junior
Veronika Tueros (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy). Aviles worked the first half, didn't allow a goal or get a save, and picked up the victory. Tueros worked the final 45 minutes, allowing one goal and making two saves.
Rutgers-Camden concludes its season Wednesday with a Senior Night home game against Richard Stockton College at 7 p.m. The Raptors will honor seniors
Katie Angelosante (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), Bec Garretson (Atco, NJ/Hammonton), Rebecca Gougher (Galloway, NJ/Absegami), Laura Rathof (National Park, NJ/Gateway Regional) and
Rachel Sindoni (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), as well as
Molly Felici (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional), who has junior eligibility but will be a departing senior academically.
