Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 31, 2015) – Sometimes good fortune is the best ally a team can have, and that proved to be the case for Rutgers University-Camden in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championships here Saturday afternoon.
The third-seeded Scarlet Raptors saw sixth-seeded Rutgers-Newark threaten their goal for much of the afternoon, sail several shots near the goal, hit the post once and get denied on a Raptor backsave. Rutgers-Camden, however, scored two second-half goals and hung on to defeat Rutgers-Newark, 2-1, to advance to the NJAC semifinals.
NJAC Men's Soccer Championship bracket The Scarlet Raptors, who improve to 12-7-1 with their third straight victory, will play a 7 p.m. semifinal game at second-seeded Stockton University Wednesday. Newark fell to 13-7-1.
Saturday's victory marked the 150th for 10th-year Scarlet Raptor Head Coach
Tim Oswald, who now owns a 150-54-24 record at Rutgers-Camden.
The victory was the Raptors' seventh straight over their sister school, including the last four years in the NJAC playoffs and last Saturday in Newark. Rutgers-Camden now leads the all-time series, 31-11-2.
Saturday's game featured six yellows and one ejection, with Newark playing the final 8:33 one man down. By that time, the Scarlet Raptors owned a 1-0 lead, courtesy of a header by senior back
Ramadan Bayyan (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West), off a restart by senior midfielder
Grant Taylor (Mendham, NJ/West Morris-Mendham). Taylor sent a long ball toward the top left of the box and Bayyan soared above a crowd to head home his second goal of the season at 72:06. Both have come against Rutgers-Newark.
Shortly after Newark drew a red card, the Scarlet Raptors struck again. Hard work in the offensive third by senior midfielder
Ray El-Khoury (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) won the ball and he chipped ahead to spring sophomore
Shane Guyer (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) on a breakaway. Guyer finished his third goal of the year at 82:01, which proved to be the game-winning tally.
That insurance goal turned out to be huge, as Newark cut the game to 2-1 at 84:24. Sophomore midfielder
Anthony DeRisi (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) carried the ball to the right end line and cut a pass back to the middle of the box, which was finished by junior midfielder
Sebastian Gostynski (Garfield, NJ/Saint Charles North) for his fifth goal of the season.
In the last few minutes, Newark pushed for the tying goal, launching six shots, including a header in the final minute by junior forward
Charlie O'Connell (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) that went off the right post. Earlier in the half, when the game was still scoreless, DeRisi barely missed a pair of shots, a header over the bar and a shot wide left. With the Raptors still holding a 1-0 lead, sophomore
Carlos Castro (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) had a golden chance to tie the game from inside a crowded box, but Raptor junior back
Dan Gilbert (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) made a goal line backsave and cleared the ball.
With the clock counting down the final 10 seconds, Newark made one more rush up the field, but the play was broken up on a fine sliding tackle by senior
Riquan King (Winslow, NJ/Winslow Township) and time expired.
Newark finished with a 26-13 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Raptor freshman keeper
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) made eight saves and the Raptors also had Gilbert's backsave. Newark senior keeper
Matt Broomall (Somers Point, NJ/Mainland) had five saves.
