Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2015) – The St. Joseph's College-Long Island women's basketball outscored Rutgers University-Camden, 45-23, in the second half as it rallied to a 63-50 non-conference victory here Monday night.
The loss snapped the Scarlet Raptors' three-game winning streak to open the season, dropping Rutgers-Camden to 3-1. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, improved to 2-3, snapping a two-game losing streak.
The St. Joseph rally spoiled a milestone performance by Rutgers-Camden senior guard/forward
Kamari Talley (Camden, NJ/Creative Arts), who notched a double-double, including a game-high 19 points to pass the 1,000-point barrier for her combined collegiate career. A transfer to Rutgers-Camden who is playing her second season with the Scarlet Raptors, Talley netted 13 points in the opening half to reach 1,000 points and help stake Rutgers-Camden to a 27-18 lead at the break. After scoring 221 points and earning All-Conference Honorable Mention during her first year at Rutgers-Camden in 2014-15, she owns 57 in three games this season after missing the Raptors' first contest with an injury.
Her 19 points raised her career total to 1,006 points. She added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
At halftime, behind 13 points from Talley and nine from freshman guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell), the Scarlet Raptors led by nine points. Foul trouble, however, took its toll on the Scarlet Raptors in the second half as sophomore forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) fouled out and both Talley and junior forward/center
Caroline Santiago (Vineland, NJ/Buena Regional) finished with four fouls apiece. Greene and sophomore forward
Olivia Crenny (Blackwood, NJ/Camden Catholic) both finished with three fouls for the short-handed Raptors, who also were missing sophomore guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) due to illness.
That combination took its toll on the Raptors in the second half as the Golden Eagles whittled away the deficit. They finally passed Rutgers-Camden, 35-34, on a jumper by junior Michelle
Lupoli (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) with 1:44 left in the third quarter. That field goal was part of a 10-point run to close out the quarter, giving St. Joseph's a 41-34 advantage. They led by as many as 16 points (56-40) in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore forward
Andrea Iavarone (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half for the host team, while freshman guard
Asia Rountree (Bellport, NY/Bellport) notched nine of her 10 points after the break. Lupoli finished with 12 points, including eight in the second half. Junior guard
Jackie Zizzo (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) finished with a team-high 14 points for the Golden Eagles, with nine of them coming in the opening half.
Iavarone added a game-high 12 rebounds to notch a double-double.
In addition to 19 points from Talley, Greene scored 14 and Obasi added 13 for the Scarlet Raptors. Talley had 0 rebounds, while Obasi added eight as the Raptors held a 45-38 advantage off the boards.
