Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 2, 2015) – The Rowan University women's basketball team went on a 23-14 run in the third quarter, turning a three-point halftime lead into a 12-point game, and the Profs went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 69-58, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
Rowan improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-2 and 1-1.
The Profs lead the all-time series, 49-15.
Guard/forward
Kaitlin Schullstrom (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck), a graduate student, scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the second half for the Profs, whose press helped to force 23 Scarlet Raptor turnovers. Twelve of them came in the second half after the Profs had taken a 32-29 lead at the break.
With the teams tied, 43-43, late in the third quarter, the Profs got a huge three-pointer from Schullstrom, sparking a 12-point run to end the quarter. Sophomore guard
Summer Crilley (Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) followed with her own trey, and junior guard
Anyssa Sanchez (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) tacked on a pair of foul shots to make if a 51-43 game. The Profs closed out the quarter with jumpers by grad student guard/forward
Melissa Lake (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and junior guard
Valerie Garofalo (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit). Rowan led by as many as 15 points (64-49) in the final quarter and the Scarlet Raptors never got closer than eight points (64-56 and 66-58) the rest of the way.
Schullstrom's 19 points led a balanced attack which saw Sanchez scored 12 points, while Crilley and junior guard/forward
Ashanti Bishop (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) added nine apiece. Forward
Kate Matthews (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson), another grad student, collected 13 rebounds, while tying Garofalo with seven points.
Garofalo dished off a game-high eight assists.
Rutgers-Camden received the third straight double-double from senior guard/forward
Kamari Talley (Camden, NJ/Creative Arts), who notched game-high totals of 24 points and 16 rebounds. Sophomore guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) added her own double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, while sophomore forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) had nine rebounds and six points. Junior forward/center
Caroline Santiago (Vineland, NJ/Buena Regional) also scored six points, while grabbing five rebounds to help the Raptors hold a 45-40 edge off the boards.
Rowan shot 24-for-70 (34.3 percent) from the floor, but went 15-for-18 (83.3) as it outscored Rutgers-Camden by 10 points from the foul line. The Raptors were 26-for-74 (35.1) from the floor and 5-for-6 (83.3) from the line.
Both teams return to NJAC action Saturday. Rowan hosts New Jersey City University in a 1 p.m. game, while Rutgers-Camden visits Kean University for a 3 p.m. contest.
