Box Score UNION, N.J. (Dec. 5, 2015) – The Kean University women's basketball team raced to a 41-16 halftime lead and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 76-51, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
Kean improves to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-3 and 1-2.
The Scarlet Raptors led, 2-0 and 4-2, early in the game behind field goals from senior guard/forward
Kamari Talley (Camden, NJ/Creative Arts), but the Cougars scored the next 10 points to open up a 12-4 lead. By the end of the first quarter they led, 20-10, and scored the first 16 points of the second quarter to take a 36-10 lead.
By halftime, freshman guard
Marajiah Bacon (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) had 11 points for the Cougars, while junior guard
Jaquetta Owens (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) had 10. A pair of players, freshman guards
Miesha Bacon (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) and
Tori Schweyher (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) both had nine first-half points. Freshman center
Ruby Asabor (Elmont, NY/Long Island Lutheran), meanwhile, had nine first-half rebounds,
Talley and freshman guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) both had six points in the first half for Rutgers-Camden, while sophomore guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) had six rebounds.
The Scarlet Raptors sliced their deficit to only 11 points with a huge 30-16 third-quarter run to make it a 57-46 game. Greene scored 10 points in the quarter, while Talley added seven in the quarter, but the Cougars recovered to close out the game by out-scoring the Scarlet Raptors, 19-5, in the fourth quarter.
Owens finished with 21 points for the Cougars, while Marajiah Bacon canned 17 and Miesha Bacon added 15. Owens also added three steals, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists.
Asabor and freshman forward
Diana Todaro (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) both notched 13 rebounds for the Cougars, who held a 64-57 advantage off the glass. Todaro and Marajiah Bacon both had game-high totals of five steals apiece.
Rutgers-Camden received 16 points from Greene, while Talley notched her fourth straight double-double with 15 points and her Raptor career high of 19 rebounds. Greene added a team-high three steals.
Sophomore forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) hauled down eight rebounds and Racobaldo finished with seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. NJAC game at Stockton University.
